Find out how to get legal help and if you qualify for free legal aid.
Kitsap Legal Services: For people with income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. We have volunteer attorneys, paralegals, and others willing to assist you to advocate for yourself after getting the information and confidence you need. Currently, you need to go through a screening process to become eligible by calling CLEAR 1-888-201-1014 or filling out the online application at http://nwjustice.org/clear-online (their website indicates they will only call you back for loss of government benefits or housing so you still need to call them for all other issues). Once our funding increases we will be able to do the screening and eligibility at our office.
Northwest Justice Project: The statewide civil legal aid organization with the most funding and paid attorneys on the phone and around Washington State. They can provide advice on the phone and direct representation in court. To become eligible by calling CLEAR 1-888-201-1014 or filling out the online application at www.nwjustice.org (their website indicates they will only call you back for loss of government benefits or housing so you still need to call them for all other issues).
Self-help publications: You can get many documents to help you with most areas of civil law and court procedures at www.WashingtonLawHelp.org and advocate for yourself. Attorneys write these documents with the goal of people being able to help themselves. There are also instructions on how to fill out court forms.
Kitsap County Aging and Long Term Care: The local county government has a contract for seniors to receive direct legal assistance in many areas. They contract with Northwest Justice Project to provide screening through CLEAR and then provide attorneys to help seniors on the phone or in-person within Kitsap County. The Kitsap County contact number is 1-800-562-6418 and website is www.kitsapgov.com/altc/communityservices.htm#legal

HOW TO GET HELP WITH CIVIL (non-criminal) LEGAL ISSUES:
- Visit the office during open office hours or contact CLEAR at 1-888-201-1014 to complete the eligibility screening and intake interview. (If calling CLEAR, call between 9:10 am to 12:15 pm Monday through Friday. This hotline has attorneys who can help you over the phone the same day you call. CLEAR may refer your case to Kitsap Legal Services and we will call you to discuss an appointment.)
- Meet with an advocate who will help you prepare to meet with an attorney.
- You will be scheduled to meet with a volunteer attorney. This appointment may be 1 to 8 weeks into the future. You must continue advocating for yourself while waiting for advice. If your legal issue is something we are unable to assist with, we will do our best to refer you to the most appropriate legal resource for your legal need.
Legal issues are technical and require a great deal of concentration by you and the legal volunteer. Please arrange for childcare as we cannot provide safe childcare and children will make getting advice difficult. You will need to concentrate and legal volunteers also need to focus on the legal issues and advice.
Our office is a professional law office and the volunteers are providing you a valuable service. We expect all people getting help will be polite, patient, and appreciative of everyone at our office. Anyone not behaving in this way will be asked to leave. We understand you are going through a difficult time, but politeness goes a long way.
You will not be able to meet with an attorney during open office hours. During the intake process, you may be given self-help tools and instructions to complete prior to scheduling a future self-help focused consultation with an attorney.
